The UK government has announced that second vaccine jabs could be given earlier and local restrictions to be imposed to tackle the rising problem of the Indian Covid variant in badly hit areas.
Cases have more than doubled to 1,313 in a week.
Bolton has been particularly affected by a spike in Covid cases. The Indian variant makes up the majority of new coronavirus cases.
Lynn Donkin, the town’s assistant director of public health, told BBC: “We’ve now got a picture of widespread community transmission.”
